Chinese boxes 「入れ子細工の箱」 （「007 カジノ・ロワイヤル」）

シリーズ全巻を先日読み終わった007の原作小説から表現を拾うことにする。第１作「カジノ・ロワイヤル」に Chinese boxes という言い回しが出てきた。「中国の箱」とは何だろうか。

仕事に嫌気がさしたジェームズ・ボンドを、フランス諜報機関の知人ルネ・マティスが諭す場面で出てくる。 - Englishmen are so odd. They are like a nest of Chinese boxes. It takes a very long time to get to the centre of them. (Ian Fleming: Casino Royale) 辞書を引くと、 - 入れ子（一つの箱が一段大きい箱にぴったり入るようになっている箱のセット）；入れ子式のもの （リーダーズ第２版） - 入れ子箱（小さい箱から順に大きい箱に入れられるようになった１組の箱） （ジーニアス英和大辞典） とある。 こんな構造を英語でどう説明すればいいのか、英語の辞書を見ると、例えば、 - a set of boxes graduated in size so that each fits into the next larger one (Merriam-Webster's Online Dictionary) - a matched set of boxes, usually elaborately decorated and decreasing in size so that each fits inside the next larger one. (Random House Unabridged Dictionary) それから、007の例に出てくる nest は「巣」と考えると意味が通らない。 辞書には、 「(入れ子式・重箱式になった箱・盆などの)一組、一そろい」「重ねられるものの一組、入れ子式のセット」といった意味が載っている。 - a nest of tables 重ねテーブル （ジーニアス英和大辞典） また動詞として、「(箱など)を入れ子にする、ぴったりと重ね合わせる、きっちりと収める」という意味にもなる。 - nest boxes for more compact storage 場所を取らないように箱を重ね合わせる - bowls that nest easily for storage 簡単に重ねてしまっておける鉢 （ランダムハウス英和大辞典） あらためて Chinese boxes に戻って、Wikipedia を見ると、 - Chinese boxes are a set of boxes of graduated size, each fitting inside the next larger box. A traditional style in Chinese design, nested boxes have proved a popular packaging option in the West for novelty or display reasons. The Russian matryoshka doll is a modern interpretation of this form. （以下略） http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_boxes とあり、これが正しければまさに中国由来なのでこの名前がついたことになる。 また、ここにあるように、ロシアの「マトリョーシカ人形」がこの細工では有名だろうが、私の使っている電子辞書の和英辞典では、 - one of a set of nesting Russian dolls と訳している。オンラインの英語辞書にも matryoshka doll を載せているものはごく少なく、英語としてはあまり知られていないのではないか。それでも Wikipedia はこれで見出しを立てていて、 - A matryoshka doll, also known as Russian nesting/nested doll, refers to a set of wooden dolls of decreasing size placed one inside the other.
